Brighton & Hove and Crawley are likely to be the only Sussex clubs in action in the South of the Thames senior 7-mile cross-country event at Beckenham.
Once one of the premier cross-country races in the South of England and traditionally a stepping stone on the quest for international racing it is still a good quality race. Most Sussex cross-country internationals from Brighton & Hove’s Hugh Foord, back in the fifties through Steve Ovett as he prepared for his Olympic triumph and Peter Standing in the eighties all won the individual title and there has been several other Sussex winners since.
A plethora of road racing has dented its attraction in recent years but never the less it is still a very competitive and good quality race.
The resurgence of cross-country racing in Sussex may attract more Sussex teams to compete in future years.
Brighton & Hove are hoping to field a reasonably strong team that could see a top ten team placing and that would be a pretty good effort while Crawley could also get a high placing if they can get their full team on parade.
