Kevin Rojas (Brighton & Hove) made it three PBs in his last 3 marathons with a terrific 2.18.44 in Berlin on Sunday.
This performance takes him into the UK top 10 for 2015 and is the fourth fastest marathon of all time by a Sussex athlete (behind Derek Stevens in 1984, Ian Beauchamp in 1978 and Dan Rathbone in 1997).
But the result wasn't a foregone conclusion after Rojas moved slightly too far ahead of target pace for the second 5km of the race (16.04) and had to dig deep into his mental and physical reserves in the latter stages to bring home the performance he deserved.
Kevin, who became a father for the first time 6 months ago, now sets his sights on Manchester next spring, where he aims to edge closer to Rathbone's Brighton & Hove club record of 2.16.23.
Spartathlon
There was also an exceptional performance at the weekend from Brighton-based ultra-international, Dan Lawson, who became the first British athlete since 1998 to finish on the podium at one of the world's leading ultra-races, Spartathlon in Greece.
Described as "the world's most gruelling race", the 245km Spartathlon traces the footsteps of the legendary Athenian messenger, Pheidippides.
This is one of a handful of races that the world's best ultra-runners dream of winning and Dan achieved a brilliant and unexpected 2nd place behind the reigning 24 hour World Champion, Florian Reus.
Dan's time of 23 hours 53 minutes and 32 seconds not only broke the mythical 24 hour barrier but was also the second fastest time ever by a Briton on this course.
Barns Green
Chichester’s James Baker notched up another victory in the Barns Green Half-marathon on Sunday when he was a clear winner over Max Dumbrell (Brighton & Hove).
Clocking 71:08 Baker finished virtually two minutes clear of Dumbrell, who clocked 72:56 with Lewes runners Ben Savill and Dave Bradford battling out the bronze medal placing with Savill beating his fellow Lewes runner to the line by just two seconds in 73:26.
Glen Driver from Haywards Heath clocked 74:59 in fifth place with a third Lewes runner Lewis Side placing sixth in 76:30.
Amy Harris (Horsham Amphibians) led the women home in 82:09 with Sarah Kingston (Worthing F40) clocking 83:13 in second place and another 040 woman, Sue Fry (Hailsham) third in 86:29 while Elspeth Turner (Horsham Blue Star) who is now in the 050 age group was a further eight seconds back in fourth place.
