It is the turn of the Cross-country Veterans, now known as Masters, to step up to the Championship table this weekend when the Sussex Masters Cross Country championship come up for decision at the Lancing Manor course.
We could see the battle that should have happened at the County Championships in the women’s event if those who are entered turn up.
Confusingly, as there are three ten year age groups, they are all in the same race but not in the same group.
Emma Macready (Worthing) oft times Sussex senior champion lines up in the W35 group along with Helena Tobin (Brighton & Hove) who finished fourth in the recent senior championship and Sue Fry (Hailsham) who finished ninth in the County event. Also likely to challenge are Caroline Hoyte (A80) who, like Macready missed the County, and Elspeth Turner (Horsham) who was sixth in the County and they compete in the W45 group..
If they all face the starter then the odds should be on Macready but Hoyte or Tobin will not be far adrift.
The afternoon will open at 1.00 with the M50/60 where Keith Newton (Brighton & Hove) who already has more than ten Sussex Master’s crowns to his name will be seeking another victory but he could come under pressure from newcomers to the age group.
The Women’s groups will all race in one race at 1.40 while the M40 men complete the afternoon at 2.10.
Here reigning champion Howard Bristow (Brighton & Hove) will come under considerable pressure from James Baker (Chichester), a newcomer to the age group and who certainly got the better of their clash in the County Championships although Bristow was certainly off form then.
