Roedean schoolgirl Amber Anning smashed the championship record in the Sussex Schools Combined Events championship at Crawley on Wednesday.
Competing in the junior pentathlon Anning took the lead in the opening event, the 75m hurdles where she clocked 12.4s and she moved further away from her rivals when putting the shot 9.22m the high jump where she leapt 1.51, and the long jump where she leapt 5.09m and only in the final event, the 800m where Harmony Cooper (Rye College) clocked 2:28.1s was she bettered by anyone.
Totalling 2946 she not only cracked the English Schools National standard she broke Bexhill’s Katie Garland’s four year old record of 2881 with 2946 points.
Last weekend Garland won the silver medal in the National under 20 Heptathlon championship.
Tom Pitts (Claremont) had a good battle with Joshua Loach (Hurstpierpoint) in the Junior Boys Pentathlon before winning with 2297 points to 2236 and it was even closer in the Intermediate girls event where Olivia Dowie (Worth) totalled just twelve points more than Katinka Morris (Willingdon) scoring 2395 points.
Things could not have been more different in the Intermediate boys competition where Blatchington Mill’s Matt Smith won by some 800 points with 2814 points. Smith, who won the U17 400m and triple jump titles and took silver in the Long and High jumps at the weekend, also set a Schools standard leap in the long jump with 6.52m, a performance that would turned his silver to gold in the long jump at the weekend.
