Brighton Phoenix’s Almi Nerurkar set a new Sussex 5k record of 15:35 on the roads of Barcelona on the final day of 2025. The performance eclipsed the long-standing mark set in 1994 by Brighton & Hove AC Olympian Sonia McGeorge, improving the record by 12 seconds.
Almi’s run caps an excellent year for distance running in the county, with Sussex 5k records falling across several age groups. Among them was Alex Riley (B&H), who set a British U20 men’s 5k record of 13:41 in March, just one second outside the Sussex senior best of 13:40 held by Tim Hutchings (CRA).
