The final day at the England Schools produced a third gold medal and a silver medal and three near misses, which was an excellent result for the Sussex team and debut team manager Leanne Buxton who had spent three days in Manchester with the various teams.
It was the turn of the junior (U15) team and Elliott Hanslow from Thomas Bennett, whose older brother Dylan had finished sixth in the senior steeplechase on Friday was determined to better his brothers placing. Elliott had a marvellous run in his heat winning and equalling the Sussex record of 11.37s and in the final, he led the field a merry dance smashing that time and taking the gold medal in 11.21s.
The silver medal came in the girl’s javelin throw where Varndean’s Dulcie Yelling succumbed to Ayesha Jones from Bucks who threw a massive 42.50m to better Dulcie’s season’s best of 41.06m. Brighton College’s Eloise White also had a good throw just missing the medals in fourth place with 36.19m while in eighth place was Ardingly’s Biba Mills.
In the hammer throw, Alice Howie (Davison) was another to take fourth place throwing 43.12m and a big Pb leap of 5.30 from Tanbridge House’ Madeline Way saw her take fourth place in the long jump while Nelly Bathhood-Smith took eighth place with 5.10m.
On the track, Elodie Bradley from Blatchington Mill took fourth place in her 100m heat in 12.52s but was squeezed back into sixth place in the final with 12.65s.
Shot putter Will Thurston from Ardingly put 13.64m for fourth place in his event while triple jumper Tom Alexander (Seaford College) took fifth place with a leap of 11.32m.
The discus saw a seventh place for Rebecca Roberts (St.Oscr Romeo) with a throw of 27.81m
n the 200m, Joseph Campbell (Cardinal Newman) after clocking 24.03s in his heat for fourth place sneaked into seventh place in the final with 24.32s while Theo Messant-Lily (Brighton College) set a Pb of 40.17m for eighth place in the final of the javelin.
