Charlie De’Vall Grice (Phoenix) just missed a medal in an exciting 1500m final at the European Games in Berlin last night.
Having qualified comfortably behind Edinburgh’s Chris O’Hare on the Wednesday, Grice ran a sensible race and was always in contention.
Amazingly the talented 17-year-old Norwegian, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the youngest of the three siblings who had all made the final, led by the half way point and instead of his elder brothers pulling through to win, he kept his nose in front to take the title in 3:38.10s.
Jake Wightman (Edinburgh) who was near the back of the field with 300 metres to go came storming through in a close and tense final fifty metres to snatch the bronze medal in 3:38.25s, with Grice squeezed into fifth place in 3:38.65s and O’Hare down the field in ninth place in 3:39.53s.
Former Sussex Schools champion Adelle Tracey, who won the English Schools senior 800m crown in 2010, was the best of the British trio in the 800 metres final just missing a medal by finishing a close fourth in 2:00.86s. Tracey who lives over the border and runs for Surrey broke the two minute barrier for the first time when qualifying for the final earlier in the week.
This evening another Surrey athlete Jade Lally, who lives in Sussex will be competing in the Discus event.
