A busy two days for Sussex athletes

12 April, 2019 By Sussex AA

Saturday is the start of a jam-packed weekend for the county's athletes, with the first of the Southern Athletics League fixtures of 2019.

In Division 1 Crawley will be away at Gillingham for their opening match, whilst Eastbourne Rovers and a promoted Brighton & Hove AC are heading to Stevenage and Finsbury Park respectively for their Division 2 East fixtures.

East Grinstead, Hastings, Horsham, Worthing and a joint Lewes and Haywards Heath Harriers team will all compete in Division 3 South East this season, with the opening fixture hosted by Hastings. Chichester is Division 3 South West will be away at Basingstoke.

Results for this league are historically slow and are unlikely to be published before Wednesday, so if team managers receive information on the day please forward it to melanie.anning@gmail.com

Brighton Marathon Weekend: This is the 10th anniversary of the coastal marathon. On Sunday the feature event will start at 09:45 at Preston Park, with 12,000 runners entered.

Many of the leading Sussex runners will be aiming to achieve a top 10 finish. Last year Brighton & Hove’s Kevin Rojas was third and Brighton Phoenix’s Ian Leitch fourth. This year Crawley's Paul Navesey will be vying for top honours.

Helen Davies won the women's race in 2018 with a time of 2:38.41. Back to defend her title, she has a goal of beating her personal best of 2:34.11, set at the London Marathon in 2012.

The BM 10K begins at 9 a.m. This race is also doubling as the England Athletics Championship, with European silver medallist Chris Thompson the leading male, and Gemma Steele, Steph Twell and debutante Pippa Woolven set to battle for podium places in a highly competitive women's race.

On Saturday thousands of youngsters will descend on Preston Park for the Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens Mini Mile Races. Two of the winners of the inaugural event which took place along the seafront - Phoenix's Charlie Da'Vall Grice and Brighton & Hove's Amber Anning - are returning as Team GB Senior internationals, to present medals.
