Cameron Fillery stormed to a brilliant victory in the England U23 championships at Bedford at the weekend.

Fillery, who is the reigning English Schools High hurdles champion and the Sussex U20 record holder is now at Loughborough University and continuing to make great progress. At Bedford he swept to an impressive victory in the 110m hurdles in 14.12s to become one of seven medal winners for Sussex over the weekend.

Spencer Thomas (Brighton Phoenix) was just squeezed out of gold medal position in the 800 metres where, in a tactical race, he took silver in 1:51.93s with club mate Finley Bigg filling fifth place in 1:53.21s.

Also in the U23 age group George Turner (Crawley) collected a silver medal in the Pole vault when he soared to a Pb of 4.85m while fellow Crawley athlete Orla Brothers scooped a silver medal in the U20 400m hurdles in 59.94s.

Worthing hammer thrower Ben Hawkes, the South of England U20 champion had to concede the top two places to two talented throwers from Windsor but came home with the Bronze medal in the U20 Hammer throw with a throw of 67.96m while Jack Harris from Lewes cleared 4.40m, the same height as the second placed athlete but had to settle for third place in the U20 Pole vault.

There was another bronze medal for Lewes when Scott Staples threw 62.65m in the U20 Javelin throw but Brighton & Hove’s Edan Cole was not far behind in fourth place with a Pb of 62.36m.

There was another near miss for Horsham’s Harry Baker in the U20 High jump when he cleared 1.93m in blustery conditions in the High jump while Archie Davis (Brighton Phoenix) also took fourth place in the U23 1500m in 3:47.66s.

In the U20 events Natasha Purchas (Crawley) finished fifth in the Pole vault clearing 3.60m, Joe Fuggle from Wadhurst placed sixth in the 400m hurdles in 53.15s with Jamie Lambert (Crawley) clocking 55.76s for eighth place in the same event.

There was another eighth place for Lillie Franks (Crawley) in the High jump with a clearance of 1.69m while in the U18 100m hurdles another Crawley athlete, Katie Bristow finished sixth in 14.91m
