One of the oldest Sussex records tumbled last weekend when Brighton & Hove’s Cameron Fillery smashed club mate Andy Todd’s fifty year old U20 110m Hurdles record of 14.2s.
Competing at the Newham “Open” meeting the Brighton College schoolboy became the first Sussex athlete to break the fourteen second barrier and he did it twice. In his first race he recorded 13.84s and then improved to 13.71s but unfortunately the 13.71s mark was wind assisted so the Sussex record will stand at 13.84s. This cracking performance also sees him move to the top of the British Ranking Lists.
Todd, who was one of the most promising British athletes in the 1960 and went to the Mexico Olympics, was a two times English Schools champion and a European Games 400 metre hurdles bronze medallist.
Todd had set his Sussex record in 1966 but the oldest Sussex record still stands to another Brighton & Hove athlete, Suzanne Allday for her shot putt of 15.18 in 1964 while Todd still holds the U20 400m hurdles record of 51.15s in 1967.
