Indoor athletics dominates the athletics picture for Sussex athletes this weekend with the Sussex Indoor championships being held at the Sutton Arena in conjunction with the Surrey County Championships.
Track events will be held on Saturday and the field events on Sunday.
They will however be missing a couple of the leading Sussex athletes who have been invited to compete at the Muller International Invitation Games at Birmingham.
Charlie Da’Vall Grice (Brighton Phoenix) has been invited to compete over 1500 metres where he will again clash with Edinburgh’s Chris O’Hare (Edinburgh) who got the better of the encounter over 3,000m at Birmingham last weekend.
Also in action at Birmingham will be Saltdean’s Cameron Fillery who finished second in the 60 m Hurdles at the National championships, also at Birmingham, last weekend.
In this re-arranged fixture, and maybe because of the uncertain weather forecast, a smaller field than normal took to the start line, and apart from a blustery wind it was good racing conditions.
Right from the start Gyula Dudas the Hungarian Olympic walker who was second in this race last year stayed with Steyning AC’s Trevor Jones and they reached the turn on this out and back course together in 45:14, Gyula only pulling away from Trevor in the closing stages to win in 90:38, slower than last year but that may have been because he said he had done a 20K training session in the morning, Trevor closed in 16 seconds adrift, Paul Gaston of Surrey WC finished third in 103:30, almost the same time as his last year’s time, Kathy Crilley, Surrey WC was the winner of the Ladies Race in 117:13.
