Another Gold Medal for Richards

On a very good day for racing Ian Richards of Steyning, after his 3 Golds in Malaga, easily retained his Sussex Men’s 10,000m race walking title at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, in 55:18.8s. Although in a slower time than last year, after receiving a couple of warnings early on in the race, he finished well clear of fellow 70 year old Paul Gaston (Surrey Walking Club) who clocked 67:59.1s.

Podium place for Eva at Bedford

Sussex Schools took one of its smallest teams in recent years to Bedford for the finals of the English Schools Combined Events and Race Walking Championships.

The best Sussex performance of the weekend was by race walker Eva Payton-White who won the battle for the bronze medal in the senior girls 5000m, in a personal best of 30:22.81. Unfortunately, in the senior boys race, Oli Hopkins (Sussex Downs), while chasing Hampshire’s Chris Snook, pushed a little too much and was disqualified.

Team Triumph for Sussex Schools Junior Boys - - UPDATE

The Sussex Junior (U15) boys’ team won the England Schools team championship at Boston on Saturday with Adam Lindo (Downlands) just missing winning an individual medal but was selected for the International match.

After a tremendous battle with Essex the Sussex quartet took the title with a total of 8276 points to 8224 with Somerset in third place with 7752.

Although Sussex had won several team titles at these championships in recent years this if the first time they have won the Junior Boys title.
