Sparkling third place for Sussex Schools at Crawley

It was a great afternoon for Sussex Schools in the Inter-counties Schools match on Saturday.

In dull and blustery conditions that was a hindrance to most athletes at K2 the Sussex team finished a splendid third in a tight match that saw Kent lead all the way and win with 612 points with Surrey taking second place with 548 points after Sussex had held second place for much of the match.

Sussex had to settle for third place with 515 points to hold off Hampshire who scored 504 points.

Amber and Ben Strike Gold

There was more glory and medals for Sussex youngsters at the English U15/17 Track and Field championships at Bedford over the weekend including two titles plus three Sussex records.

Again pride of place must go to U17 Worthing thrower Ben Hawkes who retained his unbeaten Hammer record this season with another crushing victory with 71.91m but he also added a silver medal in the discus throw with a personal effort of 52.70m, which is also a new Sussex record. Hawkes very nearly collected another medal in the shot putt placing fourth with 15.24m.

More Under 15 Records - Euro U23 Champs

The Sussex Under 15 athletes are determined to rewrite the Sussex U15 League records this season and the had another bite last Wednesday.

In June six tumbled in both the East and West match and at Wednesday’s East Division match at Lewes another three fell by the wayside.

In almost perfect conditions newly crowned English Schools Junior javelin champion Lizzie Korczak broke the League record again having broken it in June and then lost it a couple of days later to Horsham’s Peanut Meekings.
