Brighton & Hove retain Under 13 team title

Brighton & Hove held on to the Sussex Under 13 League title at K2 on Sunday after an afternoon long battle with Crawley.

These two teams were stuck together, with just a few points separating them for most of the afternoon, but the seaside team managed to squeeze a small buffer before the relays at the end of the programme to score 393 points to the home club’s 376 points.

Two Silvers and Bronzes for Sussex at Bedford

There were three medals but no golds for Sussex athletes at the England U15 and U17 championships at Bedford with the Sunday competitors enjoying almost continuous rain and wind.

Lizzie Korczak (Brighton & Hove), who has beaten the Sussex U17 javelin record several times this year, suffered what I believe was her first defeat of the season, in this age group, throwing 42.57m to take the silver medal in difficult conditions. Ironically she was beaten in the English championships by Scottish thrower Keira Wadddell, who is a year older, with 46.41m.

Mixed fortunes for Sussex Schools Combined Eventers

There were mixed fortunes for the three individual Sussex School athletes who travelled to Boston for the finals of the English Schools Combined events championships.

Despite having a slightly lower key season that last year the ever reliable Matt Smith (BHASVIC), in his final year at these championships had a good result in the Senior (U19) decathlon by placing tenth with 5470 points.

He did manage to include one Pb in his ten events with a run of 18.07s in the 110m hurdles.
