Record Fields at Sussex Schools Y 7/8

A record number of more than six-hundred youngsters competed in the Sussex Schools Year seven and eight cross-country championships at Christ’s Hospital last Thursday. The top twenty runners in each of the four race will be invited to represent Sussex Schools in the South East Inter-counties match, also at Christ’s Hospital, in a few weeks-time.

First blood went to Anna Fox (Great Walstead) in the Year 7 Girls race. Fox, who a couple of weeks back won the final U13 race in the Sussex League at Bexhill was again triumphant finishing ahead of Varndean’s Dulcie Yelling and Rosie Gasson (Burgess Hill) who have both got a Winter season of Cross-country running behind them.

Hove Park won the team race with 110 points to Dorothy Stringer’s 119 and Burgess Hill Girls School’s 130.

In the Year 7 Boys race Pelayo Eatrecanales (Windlesham) won from Jude Clayton (Worthing) and Archie Turner (Sion) while the team result saw Windlesham score 90 points to St.Andrews 130 and Dorothy Stringer 135.

The Year 8 Girls race saw another Great Walstead runner produce the goods when Bea Ingles, who has Sussex League racing behind her this winter, got the better of Amie Harvey (Oriel) and Sophia Packham (Lewes Old Grammar), who also have League experience.

Great Walstead took the team title with 91 points to Roedean’s 103 and Cardinal Newman’s 107.

Luke Newton from Oriel won the boy’s race from Priory’s Louis Goodwin and Alex Riley (Cardinal Newman) while Priory took the team title with 31 points from Cardinal Newman 38 and Worthing 100.
