On Your Marks
We are saddened to report the death of Tony Lett, the author of 'Speed,’ formerly ‘On Your Marks’ a free monthly email magazine for sprint coaches. For many years Tony generously shared his knowledge and expertise and the last edition of Speed was published just weeks before he died.
Tony Lett, a former senior lecturer in automotive and mechanical engineering, and latterly a gym instructor, died from cancer on 08/11/2016, which has been under treatment since 2011.
He was noted for his work in athletics, having been the national coach of Swaziland from 1972-75, regional coach in Kenya from 1978-80 and the national coach of Botswana from 1981-1991. It was in the latter honorary post that he achieved his greatest success, bringing the nation from two events per year to a fully operational annual programme of events that were the forerunner of the countries current success.
In 2008 he was awarded England Athletics Coach of the Year and for the past twenty years has been coaching sprints, strength and conditioning with Cornwall Athletics Club.
‘I’ve had a good life and praise the NHS for extending it this far. Around the world I have made a lot of friends, so what more could I ask for.’
As his stepsons, we want to let people know that Tony decided against having a funeral. Instead, a memorial to Tony has been established with Bowel Cancer UK. We would ask that people use that to share their memories and thoughts about him and to make donations to support research into preventing bowel cancer.
